In Memoriam

May 4, 1932 - August 27, 2016

Mort, or Sonny to his family, was a much loved husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.  His lifelong avocation was making art, and his creative joy and unique vision was expressed through his drawings, etchings, and paintings. Since the early 1970s, his work has been on display in homes and offices nationally and internationally.

He lived in Sarasota since 2000 and loved the cultural life here.  He and his wife have had season tickets for many years to Sarasota Opera, Sarasota Orchestra, FST, the Asolo, as well as memberships in Ringling Museum and Mote Marine.  Mort especially enjoyed the Saturday life-drawing sessions at Art Center Sarasota and the friends and colleagues he met there. His body of work can be viewed at mfmillerart.com.

A graduate of Cornell University, he went from ROTC to Korea for two years as a Lieutenant.  Returning home, he began his career, retiring from the US Postal Service as head of Human Resources for upstate NY.  In that capacity, he often went to Washington, DC to negotiate contracts as part of the USPS management team.

Mort always demonstrated a quiet strength and graceful dignity that brings solace to his family even in this time of loss. He will always be remembered for his generosity in his love and life, but especially his wit and wry sense of humor.  He is survived by the love of his life, Roberta; his sister, Elaine Sanzel (Ivan); his children, Miriam Rebibo (Joel), Beth Bauer (Joe DeGise II), and Jim (Lina); stepson Michael (Nicole); his 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
